Discovering Zaros and Faistos: Crete’s Hidden Soul in the Heart of the Island

Crete is often praised for its gorgeous beaches and vibrant cities, but the true soul of the island lies in its heart — in its ancient sites, its peaceful villages, and its lush mountainsides. Two places that beautifully capture this spirit are Zaros, a tranquil village known for its natural beauty and springs, and Faistos (Phaistos), one of the island’s most important and atmospheric archaeological sites.

A visit to Zaros and Faistos offers the perfect blend of nature, history, and authentic Cretan culture — far from the crowds, but rich in stories.

Zaros: A Village of Springs and Serenity

Nestled at the southern foot of Mount Psiloritis (Crete’s highest mountain), Zaros is a small village famous for its fresh spring water, lush landscapes, and warm hospitality. For centuries, its natural springs have given life to the surrounding land, creating a green oasis in the otherwise rugged Cretan countryside.

One of the village’s highlights is Lake Votomos, a peaceful, emerald-green lake just outside the village center, surrounded by walking paths, picnic spots, and small tavernas. It’s a perfect spot for a leisurely afternoon: you can stroll along the water, feed the ducks, or relax with a coffee while taking in the views of the mountains.

Zaros is also a gateway to nature adventures. Hikers will love the nearby Rouvas Gorge, a stunning path through pine forests, rocky cliffs, and wildflowers — especially beautiful in spring. Whether you’re up for a serious trek or just a gentle walk, Zaros offers trails for every pace.

When you’re ready to eat, Zaros’ tavernas serve some of Crete’s best traditional food, much of it made with local ingredients: fresh trout from the springs, goat cheese, hearty mountain greens, and raki distilled by village families.

Faistos: The Palace of the Myths

Just a short drive from Zaros lies Faistos (Phaistos), an ancient Minoan palace that rivals Knossos in importance, but with a much more peaceful atmosphere. Perched on a hill overlooking the fertile Messara Plain, Faistos was once a thriving center of Minoan civilization, flourishing from around 1900 BC.

Walking through the ruins of Faistos is like stepping back in time. You can explore massive courtyards, royal apartments, storerooms, and grand staircases — all designed with the skill and grace that characterize Minoan architecture. One of the most famous archaeological finds from Faistos is the Phaistos Disc, a mysterious clay disk covered in a spiral of stamped symbols that has puzzled scholars for decades.
