General Information

Menies Beach

Menies Beach, also known as Diktynna, is a secluded coastal gem located approximately 45 kilometers northwest of Chania, on the northeastern tip of the Rodopos Peninsula in Crete. This tranquil beach is characterized by its pebbled shoreline, deep crystal-clear waters, and surrounding rugged cliffs, offering a serene escape far from urban life. Accessible via a challenging 23-kilometer dirt road from the village of Rodopos best navigated with a 4x4 vehicleor by boat from Kolymbari harbor, Menies remains untouched by modern development, lacking facilities such as restaurants or restrooms. Visitors are advised to bring their own supplies and essentials. The area holds significant historical importance, being the site of the ancient sanctuary of the goddess Vritomartis, a revered figure in Cretan mythology. Remnants of the Roman-era temple dedicated to her can still be seen near the beach. Additionally, about one kilometer southwest lies the 9th-century monastery of St. George, abandoned centuries ago due to pirate raids, with its 16th-century watchtower still standing. Menies Beach is also part of the Natura 2000 network, highlighting its ecological value and the preservation of its unique natural environment.

Chironisia Bay

Chironisia Bay is a secluded coastal gem nestled on the rugged Rodopos Peninsula in northwestern Crete, accessible only by boat. Renowned for its crystal-clear, deep blue waters and dramatic rocky cliffs, the bay offers a tranquil escape from the more frequented tourist spots. The area is dotted with small sea caves, making it an ideal destination for snorkeling and spearfishing enthusiasts. Many visitors opt for guided boat tours departing from Kolymbari harbor, which often include stops at both Menies Beach and Chironisia Bay, providing opportunities to explore underwater WWII relics and the pristine natural beauty of these hidden locales. As there are no facilities on-site, it's advisable to bring necessary supplies such as water, snacks, and sun protection. Chironisia Bay's untouched landscape and serene ambiance make it a must-visit for those seeking an authentic and peaceful Cretan coastal experience.
