General information

Imbros gorge

Imbros Gorge, situated in the province of Sfakia, is a highly popular destination for nature lovers in Crete. Spanning a distance of 11 km, the scenic route commences from the charming village of Imbros, perched 700 meters above sea level. At the outset, the gorge, known as Porofarago or Porolagos, presents a wide expanse with relatively low sidewalls. However, as you venture further down, the canyon gradually transforms, with the sidewalls soaring higher and the landscape becoming increasingly awe-inspiring. Traces of the ancient stone paved trail, once a crucial passage from Sfakia to Chania, can still be spotted along various sections of the gorge. This very canyon witnessed several historic clashes between the Ottoman Empire and Christians during the Turkish occupation of Crete in 1821 and 1867.

Continuing our exploration, we come across the site called Airplane, where a wreckage of a German plane from World War II lies. As we proceed, the gorge reveals its most breathtaking segment, Stenada. In this section, the gorge narrows down to a mere 1.6 meters, while the towering walls rise up to an astonishing height of 300 meters. The rock formations intricately carved by nature add an exquisite touch to the surroundings. As we make our way through narrow passages, we eventually reach the exit of the gorge near the village of Komitades.

Sfakia

Our next destination is Sfakia, also known as Chora Sfakion, located 73km southeast of Chania town. It is a charming village with a population of 2000 people, nestled amidst breathtaking gorges and picturesque coastal villages. Some of the well-known villages in this area include Fragokastello, Kallikratis, Askifou, and Loutro. The Sfakia region boasts an extensive network of gorges, including the famous Samaria gorge, which can be explored via the E4 footpath. If you're lucky, you might catch a glimpse of rare animals such as vultures, eagles, and the wild Cretan goat known as kri-kri (or agrimi)! Explore the untamed beauty of Sfakia and immerse yourself in its natural wonders.
