Over the course of 2 captivating hours, stroll through the charming alleys of the Old Town, admire the iconic Venetian harbor, uncover hidden corners, and hear fascinating stories that connect the past with the present. From Venetian and Ottoman influences to modern Cretan life, every step reveals something unique.
Starting from the western entrance of the Old Town, in the historic Jewish quarter of Chania, we head north and wander through the atmospheric alleyways of the Old Town — streets filled not only with centuries of history, but also with fascinating and unusual stories waiting to be uncovered.
As we reach the Old Venetian Harbor, we will admire the iconic Lighthouse of Chania, the timeless landmark and symbol of the city. The Lighthouse of Chania was originally built by the Venetians in the late 16th century (around 1595–1601) to safeguard the harbor. During the Egyptian administration of Crete in the 19th century, it was reconstructed and took on the distinctive minaret-like shape we see today, blending Venetian foundations with Ottoman and Egyptian architectural influences. Standing proudly at the edge of the harbor, it remains one of the oldest lighthouses in the Mediterranean and the ultimate reference point of Chania’s Old Town.
From there, we head south to admire the impressive Cathedral of Trimartiri, officially known as the Cathedral of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary. Built in the 19th century (completed in 1860) on the site of a former Venetian church, this three-aisled cathedral is dedicated to the Presentation of the Virgin Mary. Its elegant bell tower, ornate interior, and significant religious role make it one of the most important landmarks of the city. Just nearby, we will also visit the Catholic Church of Roman Catholic Church of the Assumption, reflecting the multicultural and multi-religious heritage that has shaped Chania over the centuries.
To complete our experience, we will enjoy a delightful tasting session of authentic Cretan products — a flavorful introduction to the island’s rich culinary tradition, featuring local delicacies that connect history, culture, and gastronomy in every bite.
History, architecture, culture, and taste — all woven together in one unforgettable walk through Chania’s Old Town with local guide.
